Note: Sunday Prep Class on 10/30/2016 will be held at 11am-12pm. All other Sunday Prep classes will be 1-2pm.

Thanks for your interest in dancing with Baksana! Baksana classes are team-taught by the group’s core members Danielle Elizabeth, Morgan Fay and Bevin Victoria with specialty lessons from our musical director Paul Evans. This means you’ll get one, two, or sometimes all of us sharing our collective knowledge on all things Baksana!
We’re excited to currently offer 2 ways to study with us:

Official Baksana Format

In this specialty training format you will learn:

-Specific Baksana Folk-Fusion combinations (vocabulary for group improvisation) and the historical/cultural references that inspired them
-Intermediate to Advanced finger cymbal techniques and drills
-Read and write detailed compositions with Baksana Finger Cymbal Notation
-Foot and Arm pathways of our common positions
-How to shine as a soloist and dance with an ensemble, building confidence with dance improvisation
-Overall musicality for dancers and tips for dancing to live music (includes lessons from Baksana musical director Paul Evans)

Session 1 and 2 trainings will kick off with a 3 day weekend intensive, followed by 3 consecutive classes spread out weekly or a few days apart. Sessions 3-4 will be just weekly classes adding on to the vocabulary you learned in the first 2 sessions. Session 5 will be another weekend intensive with weekly classes afterward AND the opportunity to audition to join Baksana for our summer busking season. Training sessions are sequential. Students will need to demonstrate a full comprehension of material in session 1 before moving on to session 2, for example. If students miss classes in a session, they can make up the work by scheduling a private lesson with our instructors. Each session comes with a training manual to help you track your progress!

At the end of each training session we will hold a Hafla, a belly dance party with informal dance and music performances, to showcase what we’ve learned! Each session varies slightly in length and cost, please click on the individual links below for specific details and to register.

Baksana loves to work hard! This is an intermediate-advanced dance format. If you are newer to belly dance, we invite you to try our Weekly Prep Classes first, to see wether this format is a good fit for you!

Weekly Baksana Prep classes

Sundays from 1-2pm  Note: Sunday Prep Class on 10/30/2016 will be held at 11am-12pm. All other Sunday Prep classes will be 1-2pm.

These classes will feature fun combinations and dance drills inspired by Baksana’s stylization of belly dance. Musicality is a big focus for Baksana dancers, so be sure to bring your finger cymbals!
We recommend Saroyan Cymbals:
However, finger cymbals (aka zils) are not 100% required for these classes – all the combinations and drills can be done without cymbals and we will offer variations to accommodate all-levels. Stay up to date on who’s teaching and what we’ll be working on each week by joining our facebook group. We recommend at least 6 months prior belly dance training, or at least one private lesson with our instructors before joining these classes.
